"Nothing is a dramatic change," Heard, 29, says of her marriage to the 52-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star in the July issue of ELLE, on stands June 23. "We've been together for a long time now, so it's been a fairly organic process."
In Magic Mike XXL, Amber Heard keeps Channing Tatum on his toes, but in real life, the star describes married life with Johnny Depp as just a natural progression.
The couple, who got engaged over the holidays in 2012, legally tied the knot in February at their home in Los Angeles, followed by a tropical celebration with close friends and family on Depp's private island in the Bahamas.
An actress on the rise, Heard says she's had to battle Hollywood stereotypes. "I feel like I'm constantly fighting against my exterior, or this exterior presentation of myself because of how I look or perhaps because of who I'm with."
Fortunately, the Magic Mike XXL star says, "I have a fiercely independent spirit." So she continues to sift for good material, which can be demoralizing.
"I get a stack of scripts, like, once a month, and most of the time, you find these placeholder girls that are there to provide a bounce for the male character," Heard explains.
"I mean we’re trying to imitate life, and it seems to me a deeply saddening injustice that we are so uncreative and uninterested in developing representations of female life."
