Miss America 2016 : Jamie Lynn Macchia

Miss America 2016
Miss America 2016
The names were called out one by one, until the 15th name was called, and it wasn't that of Jamie Lynn Macchia.

Macchia was our Miss New York, but won't be our Miss America 2016, judges for the 95th annual pageant and scholarship competition declared Sunday night in Atlantic City.
Macchia's long journey to the stage swiftly came to a close as Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was announced the next woman to wear the crown.

Macchia, the 23-year-old Eltingville native, will return to Staten Island defeated but still proud of her accomplishments, she said.

"I've given this Miss America experience everything I have," Macchia wrote on her Instagram. "I've seen my strength, poise, maturity, drive, and confidence grow before my own eyes. I've done things I've only ever dreamed of doing and have definitely surprised myself along the way."

Many of the finalists were from the southern states — as were the fans from all over the country who arrived with signs and high hopes for their hometown contestants. Talents ranged from Miss Alabama Meg McGuffin's interpretive dance to the Matrix theme song to a touching monologue from Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson.

Aside from the competition, the presence of head judge and Former Miss America, Vanessa Williams was arguably the evening's most significant event.

Williams was not only the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America in 1983, she also went on to arguably be the most successful winner in the pageant's history.
But in 1984, 10 months into her reign, the Emmy, Grammy and Tony nominee was asked to resign or be stripped of her title after nude photos of her leaked in Penthouse Magazine.
At the beginning of the show, Sam Haskell, the Miss America Organization's Executive Chairman and CEO said even though none of the members of the organization were responsible for the decision in 1984, he wanted to personally apologize. Williams accepted the apology.

Though Macchia didn't make it into the top 15, she has come a long way from her Eltingville roots. Beginning as a 17-year-old at Staten Island Technical High School, she tried unsuccessfully for seven years in pageants at the local level.

Each year, she crept closer and closer to victory. In May 2014, she competed in the 2014 Miss New York pageant and named was second runner-up to winner Kira Kazantsev, who went on to win Miss America this year.

Then, in June, Jamie took the New York title at the St. George Theatre. It would lead her to the stage in Atlantic City Sunday night.

"You could see the potential with the girl," said Jim Smith, executive director of the Miss Staten Island Pageant. "The only thing she needed was maturity, and you can't give a 17-year-old girl maturity, you have to earn it. But she always believed in herself."

Throughout the preliminary rounds, Macchia didn't win in either her talent or swim and evening gown competitions. But the interview component is kept private, and can often count for the most among judges, Smith said, adding that Macchia's interview answers are her strong suit.

Smith said Macchia's platform was another strong point: "Inspiring Action Against Pediatric Cancer." Macchia chose this work in honor of a childhood friend, Dominic, who fought but ultimately lost his battle with leukemia.

The day before, Macchia was calm and confident of her work so far, she said. In a social media post, she said she felt peaceful, not stressed.

Macchia thanked her fans and family for all the support along the way. She said with how much she's accomplished as Miss New York so far, she's "already won."

"I have already achieved my dream of performing on the Miss America stage," she said. "I have already used my powerful voice to speak out for pediatric cancer patients and their families. I have already represented what I consider to be the greatest state in the nation."

Victoria Azarenka & Serena Williams

Victoria Azarenka & Serena Williams
Victoria Azarenka  & Serena Williams

NEW YORK -- Yanina Wickmayer was serving for the first set when the usually fiery Victoria Azarenka finally got fired up.

A few sweet backhands, followed by an emphatic fist pump, brought her back even, at 5-all, and then the 26-year-old from Belarus averted a tiebreaker with a second straight break. Azarenka went on to win uncomfortably in straight sets Thursday.

Azarenka, still returning to form after a series of injuries, is ranked only No. 20 among WTA players, but she is one of a handful of players lurking in the draw who can seriously threaten Serena Williams' quest for the calendar-year Grand Slam.

Which got us to thinking: Who are the gravest dangers to a perfect 28-0 Slam season, which would constitute professional tennis' first major run of the table in 27 years?
Besides Williams herself, that is.

One potential challenger, Garbine Muguruza, evaporated early Thursday, losing to British qualifier Johanna Konta in three sets. Muguruza beat Williams in the second round of last year's French Open and lost to her in this year's Wimbledon final.
Here are your potential answers, ranked by the degree of difficulty they would pose to Williams.

1. Belinda Bencic:

It happened 19 days ago in the Toronto semifinals, and Bencic overcame a rough start to prevail 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. It was only Serena's second loss of the season and Bencic went on to win the final.
Throw out their other meeting -- a 6-2, 6-1 win by Williams last year in Madrid. Bencic was only 17, and she was getting her first up-close look at a legend. She wasn't exactly intimidated north of the border in her second encounter.
However, Bencic, who plays Venus Williams in the third round, struggled mightily in her last match. She had to fend off three match points and her own emotions against Misaki Doi.
There is a good chance Bencic will face Serena in next Tuesday's quarterfinals.

2. Victoria Azarenka:

One of Serena's biggest weapons is the fear factor she creates, even before she steps on the court.
Azarenka has never been intimidated by Williams. In 2009, at the age of 19, Azarenka beat the world No. 1 in the Miami final. And although the head-to-head is a daunting 17-3 in favor of Williams, that number is deceiving.
In Serena's run of 23 consecutive Grand Slam singles wins this year, only one player has taken her to three sets twice. Yes, Vika, at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Azarenka and Williams would meet only in the final.

3. Samantha Stosur:

Again, the history is instructive.
Four years ago, Slammin' Sammy came out and throttled Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the US Open final. In only her second major final, the Australian pulled an upset of massive proportions.
Stosur pummeled Evgeniya Rodina 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday and is looking strong. And she has a little extra motivation this year.
"She [Williams] kicked me off my practice court yesterday," Stosur said after the match. "A few issues, but it's all right."
Outside of the practice court, Stosur and Serena can cross paths only in the final.

4. Madison Keys:

Like Azarenka, this 20-year-old American is almost too young to fully comprehend how historically great Williams is.
They have met only once -- eight months ago in the semifinals of the Australian Open. Keys was so intimidated, she pushed Williams all the way into a first-set tiebreaker, losing that extra frame by a narrow 7-5.
The big hitter from Rock Island, Illinois, is only a match away from a potential meeting with Serena, in the fourth round. Keys will have to get by the ever-crafty Agnieszka Radwanska in a third-round match Friday.

5. Ekaterina Makarova:

She, too, has a big win over Williams in a big spot.
Three years ago at the Australian Open, the 27-year-old Russian stunned Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round.
And although Makarova has lost their past three meetings, she won't be fazed by Serena's aura. Last year in Dubai, Makarova lost their first-set tiebreaker 10-8.
The 13th-seeded Makarova has a reasonable shot to see Serena in the semifinals.

Robin Williams' Birthday

Robin Williams' daughter Zelda Williams is taking a break from social media ahead of what would have been her father's 64th birthday.

The aspiring actress, 25, made the announcement to her 122,000 followers on Instagram Monday, posting a picture of clouds illuminated by rays of sunshine.

"Kinda hoping I fly thru that very cloud on the way home," the beloved actor's only daughter wrote, before explaining her reasons for social media break.

"I will be taking a break from social media in the coming weeks," she wrote. "It's a time better served away from the opinions or sentiments of others, and I appreciate your understanding.

"In my absence, I understand there will be those who wish to leave messages regarding Dad on my board, but please attempt to be respectful and kind to one another in the process, both because I will not be here to delete or mediate trolling, and because kindness is in short supply these days anyhow."

Williams also took a break from social media last summer, after she became the target of rampant cyber bullying in the wake of her father's suicide in 2014.

In an Instagram message posted last August, Zelda took aim at Internet trolls, chastising them for "mining our accounts for photos of dad" and "judging me" for not having posted more photo tributes.

She also took to Twitter at the time, apparently in the aftermath of a verbal scuffle with users who reportedly sent her upsetting Photoshopped images of her late father.

"I'm sorry. I should've risen above," she Tweeted. "Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye."

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who costarred with Williams in The Crazy Ones, also posted a tribute to the comic legend via Instagram on Tuesday.

"Smile, though your heart is aching Smile, even though it's breaking Happy Birthday RW #RobinWilliams #HappyBirthdayRobin," the actress wrote.
