Sunil Gulati : Hope Solo in World Cup

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati traveled here Monday morning for the Americans' round-of-16 game against Columbia, and when asked at the airport whether he'd have more to say about the issue that's hung over the organization for months, he told Yahoo Sports, "Doubt it."

Don't expect any more comment from U.S. Soccer on the Hope Solo situation, especially while the World Cup is going on.

Gulati wrote a lengthy letter two weeks ago to U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, who had previously criticized the organization for failing to provide a full accounting of its actions in response to Solo's arrest for domestic violence last year.

Solo was charged but never convicted, as a judge threw out the case when Solo's accusers repeatedly failed to show up for court. U.S. Soccer did not discipline Solo for the incident, even though an ESPN report revealed the police claimed the star goalie had berated an officer on the night of her arrest.

In his letter to Blumenthal, Gulati explained that Solo's accusers were not interviewed by U.S. Soccer because only a redacted police report was proffered, and further inquiry would result in a "he said, she said" impasse. Further, the organization could not take action against Solo because of the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.

Blumenthal told USA Today that he found Gulati's reply to be "tone deaf" and "nonsensical."

On the field, Solo has been brilliant, allowing only one goal in three matches. She has shown no trace of distraction, even with the controversy around her. Head coach Jill Ellis has called Solo a perfect teammate and insisted "we've moved on" from the incident.

Through the entire situation, Gulati has released statements but has not commented further. On Monday, he said that wasn't likely to change until after the end of the tournament.

"Hopefully by then I will be commenting on [Solo] as a member of the gold medalist team," he said.

U.S. women’s soccer star Hope Solo was belligerent toward the police officers arresting her, many of whom deemed her the “primary aggressor,” in a domestic-violence incident last year involving her half-sister and nephew, according to a new report from ESPN.

The report — based on police records and other documents, two sworn depositions obtained by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” and an interview with one of Solo’s alleged victims — claims the U.S. national goalkeeper called one officer “such a bitch” and claimed he was scared of her “because you know that if the handcuffs were off, I’d kick your ass.”

The 33-year-old athlete reportedly called another officer a “14-year-old boy” and told him that the necklace he asked her to remove cost more than he made in a year.

The ESPN report also reports further allegations on the incident through interviews with Solo’s half-sister Teresa Obert, including that she had been drinking, that she punched Obert multiple times in the face and slammed Obert’s then 17-year-old son’s head into a concrete floor.

Solo, who begins her Women’s World Cup campaign with the U.S. national team in Canada on Monday, was arrested in June 2014 after being accused of assault but has repeatedly proclaimed her innocence and said she was the victim.
