The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the One to Beat for Durability

SquareTrade keeps close track of the smartphone market – they perform rigorous tests of every smartphone that comes out.  Based on their testing, they assign a score from one (the best) to 10 (the worse) for each of eight categories: Front Panel – Back Panel – Gripability – Weight – Water Resistance – Slide Test – Drop Test – and Bendability Test…to arrive at their total Breakability Score.  This Breakability Score allows them to compare the breakability of today’s top devices.  The higher its score, the better the chance the device could break during an everyday accident.  This number comes into play for insurance or warranty purposes as they classify a device as a 1 – Low Risk, 5 – Medium Risk, and 10 – High Risk.

SquareTrade has their own new BendBot testing machine – the one that sparked the original Bendgate with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, so from now on they will include the Bendability Score as part of their total Breakability Score.  Last week we heard about Bendgate2 with the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, and Samsung was quick to respond.  However,  SquareTrade is here to tell us that the Galaxy S6 is one of the most durable devices it has tested to date.  It has a Breakability Score of 4 and is an improvement over the Galaxy S5 and also beats both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus…as well as the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Jessica Hoffman, vice president of global communications for SquareTrade said, “Samsung has sharpened its game with the new Galaxy S6, the phone we believe is the new phone to beat when it comes to durability.  However, while thinner and larger screen phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Apple iPhone 6 are extremely popular, and continue to make gains in durability, our claims data shows that consumers are breaking them at higher rates than ever before; Americans have spent more than $23.5 billion on smartphone repair and replacement over the last 7 years, and we continue to see those numbers climb.”

SquareTrade’s conclusions are – Samsung stepped it up with the Galaxy S6, as it performed well in the drop, dunk, slide and bend tests.  The Galaxy S6 was the least bendable of the phones tested and it survived 110 pounds of pressure before deformation occurred.  The Galaxy S6 Edge cracked, and the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus bent and separated at its volume button.  The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge did not do well in the slide test…sliding as far as the iPhone 6 Plus, although I am not too sure why the sliding is important – I suppose it could slide off your table or desk easier.  Both Galaxy S phones survived six drops from six feet high without breaking, the removable back on the Galaxy S5 kept failing off exposing the battery and insides, while the iPhone 6 Plus broke apart entirely and then stopped working 30 minutes later.  Even though Samsung makes no official claims of water resistance, all of the phones survived ten seconds of being dunked in water.
