The Mindy Project Is Canceled

The Mindy Project Is Canceled
The writing has been on the wall for a while now on The Mindy Project— facing increasingly low ratings and yet another cast shuffle, the show ended its recent season with an open ending that could also offer fans some closure in case of cancellation Now, it seems, the ax has fallen— according to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has canceled the show. But that doesn’t mean it’s over.

It’s not official yet, but the Reporter says that Hulu is in talks to pick up the show, with a possible commitment for two new seasons. Universal Television, which produces Mindy, is still in talks with the streaming giant, but Vulture also says the deal is likely to go through. Though Hulu has featured original content for years, and is launching the high-profile, Amy Poehler-backed Difficult People this summer, this would be their first attempt to rescue a show from the bitter fate of cancellation.

Yahoo! did it with Community, now enjoying its once-seemingly-impossible sixth season on Yahoo Screen, while Netflix did us all a favor by snatching up two seasons of the wonderful Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt when NBC opted not to air it.

Mindy has never been as brilliant as Kimmy Schmidt or as fiercely beloved as Community, but it has been consistently improving, putting together leads Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) and building a surprisingly sweet relationship comedy out of what started as a single-girl-on-the-town premise.

A two-season promise at Hulu might give the show the necessary breathing room, and confidence, to keep getting better. The interesting gamble, though, is whether casual fans of the show will follow it to Hulu, or simply shrug when it fails to show up on their DVR next fall. As more streaming options emerge it only becomes harder to remember which website has Friends (Netflix) and which one has Seinfeld (Hulu) and which one has that weird show High Maintenance (none of them; it started on Vimeo but recently got snapped up by HBO). But Mindy definitely deserves its second life on Hulu, and the extra effort it takes to hunt it down there.
