An Abington mother was arrested Thursday after she forced her way into an apartment and kidnapped her two children, prompting officials to issue an Amber Alert, police said.

Bruno Coelho told police Bruna Gomes, 33, the mother of his children, arrived at 94 Walnut St. at 9 a.m., knocked on the door and said, "Abington police, open the door."

"She immediately pushed the door open and forced her way in," Abington Police Chief David Majenski said. "(She) pepper-sprayed the caretaker immediately, incapacitated the caretaker. Came in, grabbed the kids and took off."

Coelho's attorney said the children knew what was happening.

"They saw the whole thing," attorney Mike Szymanski said. "They protested. They didn't want it to happen."

After Gomes fled with the children, Nathalia Coelho, 7, and Nathan Coelho, 8, an Amber Alert was issued.

"We were greatly concerned with the welfare of the children," Majenski said.

Police said Gomes had ties to Cape Cod, and a critical tip was received from a 17-year-old boy staying at a motel in West Yarmouth.

The teen said he noticed the Amber Alert on his cellphone and spotted a vehicle matching the description.

"I was throwing trash away and I was like, 'Let me check the license plate, and by chance it was the same one,'" the teen said.

Police rushed to the motel and found the two children she had taken and a third child, also believed to be hers.

Gomes was taken into custody and was transported back to Abington, where she will appear in court Friday.

The children were reunited with their father Thursday night.
